STYLE GURU STYLE: Tartan and Camel

I consider myself inept when it comes to fashioning winter-appropriate outfits. My comfort zone lies in the temperate autumn days, where a light jacket, stockings, and a skirt will do.

I am perennially toeing the line between impractical (i.e. the very description of the shoes I am donning) and comfortable.

What I’ve learned is that the key to a solid winter look is a nice coat. The coat you wear should be as posh as the ensemble you are wearing under it. You’ll be sporting it a lot, especially if the occasion you’ve dressed up for is taking place outdoors. For this outfit, I went with my longline camel coat. It’s a staple piece that seems to agree with any look. In bottoms, I pulled out my go-to pair of blue jeans. I paired them with a cream-colored, draped blouse, which may not be doing much for me in the cold, but it is certainly an ideal piece for a festive indoor event—emphasis on indoor.

The shoes I am wearing are perhaps the most daring item I’ve purchased in a long time. These black patent heeled boots are certainly not the best option if you are planning to take a quick jaunt through your local trail after substantial snowfall, but they are a winning statement piece for holiday parties. These towering heels fill me with a pinch more of assertiveness and give me a boost, which never hurts.

My ornaments of choice for this look are tassel earrings, which are near invisible against the sprawling curls of my afro, a black velvet choker, to embellish my exposed décolletage, and a red-green tartan scarf from Scotland that was given to me.

This look definitely features the largest mix of colours I’ve worn in a while. I say it’s a pleasant contrast to the grayish slush and snow that line the streets.
