STYLE GURU STYLE: Summer Grunge

Some may argue that I’m not a true ’90s baby, born in 1995, but I couldn’t be more thrilled that ’90s grunge style is making a come back. Everytime I slip on a choker, I am reminded of childhood memories spent dancing and singing along to Britney Spears and the Spice Girls as well as car rides listening to my Dad’s Nirvana CDs.

If I could have predicted the resurgence of the grunge and rock trends, I would have never thrown away my bag filled with chokers or my father’s Motörhead and Metallica concert T-shirts that I used to wear as sleep shirts. Nonetheless recreating these styles couldn’t be easier especially with runway inspiration from Alexander Wang.

Wang’s fall 2016 ready-to-wear collection successfully turned preppy styles grunge. What would normally be bright and patterned pieces were neutral black and whites, accessorized with all kinds of metals. I was inspired by the mix of black and white pieces in this collection and found no trouble recreating it with my own wardrobe.

The last days of summer are my favorite because I can wear lightweight shirts with shorts and layer. For this look, I paired my favorite summer white linen button-down shirt with black washed out cheeky shorts. Layered underneath the shirt, I’m wearing a lace bralette. Chokers are everywhere nowadays, and I love the versatility of the roped chokers. Putting together a preppy meets grunge look with pieces already in my closet could not have been easier!
