STYLE GURU STYLE: Sneakers and Skirts

I am a huge fan of the combination of tennis shoes and skirts. It provides a way to get the best of both worlds, comfort and style. However, it is sometimes harder to nail this combination than expected. Here are a few rules for crushing this combo.

The first step is picking a skirt that is casual enough. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve seen some girls absolutely slay in Sherri Hill and Converse, but that’s a hard look to pull off in everyday life. Picking a skirt that is light, above the knee, and hits at the belly button or below seems to work the best for me. I chose to use this funky mixed print denim skirt that I snabbed at a thrift store in Los Angeles.

The second rule is a neutral tennis shoe. For this look, I chose to rock a sleek white shoe. It balances out the skirt while providing a young and urban element. Kicks like Converse, Keds, and Adidas Originals are some other shoes in my skirt-shoe chic hall of fame. Choosing a printed tennis shoe is risky. It often ends up looking less like a bold print mix and more like a look pulled from a teen Disney wardrobe.

Finally, it is important to accessorize. If you are going for an easy and casual look, you can skip this step. I added a gold choker to play into the urban aesthetic I created. Watches, simple gold or silver jewelry, and minimalistic bracelets would also work well with this look.
