STYLE GURU STYLE: Be Your Own Girlboss

Just like every other fashion fiend and lover of Netflix out there, I, too, binge-watched the entire first season of Girlboss in one day. Now, if you don’t know what Girlboss is, you need to reevaluate either your book choices, Netflix choices, or brush up on your knowledge of fashion revolutionaries like the great Sophia Amoruso.

Sophia Amoruso (Sophia Marlowe in the show) created an Ebay store at the age of 23 named “Nasty Gal Vintage,” which later became the edgy and trendy site that we all know today, NastyGal.com. Amoruso wrote a book about her life and how she started her company. It was then turned into a Netflix series that recently aired. In the show, we follow the young Sophia through the early 2000s as she begins her fashion empire. Not only is her story inspiring, but so is the fashion. In Amoruso’s book, “#Girlboss,” she talks about her 1970s-inspired style. Amoruso says that her and her friends each picked a decade for their personal style and that is how they stayed on trend with the very little money that they had; genius.

The show inspired me to recreate my own Girlboss look from a few items that I already had in my closet, and I’m going to break it down so that you can easily get this look, too. Starting with the vintage band T-shirt I’m wearing: it is actually something I raided from my parents closet a few years ago and is from an actual The Who concert that took place in 1983. A graphic vintage T-shirt is a great place to start to recreate Sophia’s effortless 1970s look. Take my advice and look through your parents’ old stuff, you may find some gems! Next, in the show you very rarely ever see Sophia without a pair of flared pants. Luckily, this look is trending again making flared denim not too hard to find. Finally, I added some cork wedges to my look so that my flared overalls were not dragging on the ground. Now, you don’t have to wear wedges like mine to look like you are from the 1970s, anything with a good chunky platform heel will do.

Let me tell you, wearing this outfit made me feel trendy and tall. Being only 5’3″ I love finding new ways to feel a little taller, and flared denim and wedges made me feel like my legs were a mile long! Feeling confident in your outfit throughout the day is just one way to make yourself feel like and actual girlboss.

Sadly, this is my last article for CollegeFashionista because I am graduating from the University of Washington this June! Thank you to everyone who has read and supported my writing this past year, and thank you to CollegeFashionista for this amazing experience that I will never forget.
