STYLE GURU CITY GUIDE: Medellín

Summer travel season is upon us! Whether you are hopping on a plane, boarding a train or traveling vicariously through your friends’ Instagram photos, come and get wanderlust with CollegeFashionista! Join us all week as some of our #RAD Style Gurus from around the world give us a tour around the international city they are lucky enough to call home!

I have always wanted to visit this next spot and—thanks to Style Guru Andres Felipe Pelaez—I know “virtually” can! Andres takes us around his hometown of Medellín, Colombia to show us all the beauty and culture this South American city has to offer.

Andres’ three favorite things about Medellín

I just love the weather, the landscapes and the people.

The fashion scene:

I think that my city has one-of-a-kind fashion. The fashion scene is mostly influenced by the worldwide trends in fashion but translated in a certain way to keep it “Colombian.” I think that my personal style is not necessarily influenced by the locals. Most of the time i just try to adapt everything I see on the street, in magazines and fashion sites to my own wardrobe and personal style.

Five things you must pack to fit in with the locals?

1. A pair of sunglasses.

2. A pair of sneakers.

3. A white shirt.

4. A pair of jeans.

5. A good pair of shoes.

Favorite fashion blogger/Instagram accounts to follow that showcase Medellín

They are so many locals blogger that show the city in a lovely way but I think that Laura Echavarria (@Fashionlessons) does it perfectly!

Favorite local restaurant to dine at and favorite dish

El Cielo, but they don’t offer the typical menu. Every time I go there it is a new experience.

A perfect Saturday in Medellín
So to start your Saturday, you need a good brunch. I recommend Ganzo & Castor, a French restaurant where you can eat a lovely brunch. Then take a cab and go to El Tesoro, the best mall in town to buy some goodies. If you are staying in a hotel near to El Parque Ileras, do not hesitate to go there on at night, take in a good gin and tonic in Salón Amador the best club in town and then dance all you can until the end of the night.

Go-to place for coffee

Pergamino coffee shop—it´s on Via Primavera.

Medellín’s hidden gems

Go to Arvi, it´s a park where you can watch all of our nature and animals.

Where to stay

The Charlee Hotel.

Advice for someone visiting the city for the first time

Just have fun and do not forget to bring your camera.
