STYLE GURU BIO: Laurise McMillian

My name is Laurise McMillian, but I answer to “Reese,” as well. I’m a senior at the University of Baltimore, and this is my second semester as a style guru. Am I excited for my 18-credit schedule? Eh. Am I stoked to see all of the amazing fall fashion trends on my campus? Heck yes!

Don’t be fooled by my six-class course load. I’m not exactly a textbook and numbers kind of girl. I’d say I’m definitely more of the creative, artsy fartsy type. I’m a Digital Communications major with a concentration in Media Production. In short, I make stuff for the Internet; graphics, GIFs, videos, copy—you name it. Throughout my string of internships and college experiences I’ve learned that I’m particularly interested in doing things with social media. This summer, I had the pleasure of interning with MTV’s social media marketing department. Not only was I able to pitch ideas for the brand’s Instagram and create copy for Twitter, but I also learned about the extensive planning and strategy that go into covering an event, like the VMAs, on various social media platforms.

Apart from working my dream internship, spending the summer away from home in New York City was a completely life changing experience. I met a lot of inspiring women, and I learned a lot about myself. It’s just something about being on your own in the concrete jungle that makes you feel super empowered. I feel like I can do anything, including stepping out of the house in this fun get-up!

My friends are always saying my T-shirt dresses are just an excuse to wear pajamas outside, but I’m perfectly fine with that. This heather gray number is one of my favorites. Today I’ve paired it with a strappy chunk heel and my go-to military jacket. My style has always been some sort of mix between edgy and elegant. My hair is always changing. I’m an afro chick normally, but every now and then I experiment with weaves and fun colors. Oh, and I just got super into negative space manicures (one trip to Paintbox will do that to a girl). I’d rather play with designs and color than go for a basic French tip.

When I’m not nail art inspo to my Pinterest, you can probably catch me at gym, cooking or jet setting to D.C. to check out some live music.

In addition to style guru-ing, I’ll also be doubling as a Social Media intern, so be sure to follow @CFashionista on the gram.
