STYLE ADVICE: Breaking Up the Black

If you go to university on the northeastern coast, it may be likely that you often find yourself in a sea of black jeans, sweaters, jackets, and boots during passing time in the colder months. Heck, you may even be a part of this traveling black cloud yourself! While there is absolutely nothing wrong with head to toe, black-on-black attire, for some of us, it can get quite monotonous. But black and monotony don’t always have to be synonymous. Finding strategic ways to break up the tedium is easy!

This totally gorgeous Fashionista I spotted on campus shows us one effective but subtle way to do it. She gets her daily dosage of black in the form of a light, quilted jacket, busted knee jeans, and a pair of perfectly worn-in Superga sneaks; the classic style of the jacket makes her look put together, while the jeans and sneakers bring a cool and casual vibe to the ensemble. To break up the black, this Fashionista wears a comfy chambray shirt, from under which a lacy bralette peeks through. The bralette adds a sweet, feminine touch to this neutral outfit. While this look is clean and straightforward, it is exemplary of the perfect balance between preppy and effortlessly cool.

If pops of color aren’t quite your thing, try pops of neutral. Grays, creams, blues, browns, and even some shades of green can be simple solutions to your all black blues. On top of that, mixing and matching textures is another way to break up what could otherwise appear to be a black onesie at first glance.
