BEAUTY BAR: Back in Black

Black lipstick. It’s definitely not for everyone but it’s been making waves in the fashion and beauty scene lately. In the world of Kylie Lip Kits and Colourpop, black lipstick is moving up in the color charts. It’s certainly bold, obviously edgy, and a little reminiscent of the 90’s goth grunge era but it’s totally wearable.

I’ve always been a fan of a bold lip since I discovered the magic of lipstick through Youtube beauty vloggers, but wouldn’t have thought about trying out black until pretty recently. Contrary to popular belief, this shade doesn’t only exist on Halloween. For those who still fear red, this will probably have to wait until you can conquer the crimsons and wines but for those who crave a more intense look than your darkest cherry red gives, it’s a look worth trying.

The trick to a bold lip is to keep everything else on your face simple so the attention is drawn to the lips. With something as bold and unusual as black, it’s okay to play up other features a little more to balance out the weight of the makeup.

This Fashionista is wearing a gray dress-turned-shirt, medium wash jeans, black thigh high boots from Steve Madden, minimal gold jewelry, and a metallic blue clutch from Kate Spade. Her makeup is fairly simple with bronzed skin to avoid a too-pale look next to the black lipstick from Colourpop. On her eyes, she wears a frosty silver shadow with a dark wing of eyeliner and a pair of false lashes. There’s a nice balance of dark in her eyes and lips that don’t scream goth.

The simple outfit is great not only because it’s so versatile, but because it’s a complete look without drawing too much extra attention. The heeled boots dress up the casual jeans and the simple gold jewelry contrasts nicely against the gray in a way that predictable silver jewelry would not. Where a pop of color is lacking in the outfit and makeup, it’s found in that metallic blue Kate Spade clutch worthy of winter.

Black lipstick is risky to pull off but it’s not impossible. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s a look waiting to be seen off of the runways and on the streets.
