ALL IN THE DETAILS: Vintage With A Twist

April 29th, 2015 at 2:00am

One of the best parts of being complimented on your outfit is bragging about where you got it. Finding a deal worth boasting about is in itself a rush, but actually sharing your accomplishments with your admirers takes the whole experience one step further. I know I’m always eager to share when I’m wearing something I found at a year-end sale for one-tenth of the original price. However, I occasionally find myself stumped when thinking about where a certain item came from. Everyone has an item of clothing like this: something that’s been in your closet for so long, you couldn’t possibly remember where it came from and when you got it. I call these pieces “vintage with a twist,” and they’re exceptionally fun to wear.

While you may not always be able to pinpoint where/when you bought an item like this, that’s exactly what makes it so much fun to wear. Not being able to refer a friend to buy the same thing or even something similar means that what you’re wearing is almost completely unique. Uniqueness is, after all, a truly essential part of fashion. Fashion is used to express oneself through a sense of style, and given that every person is unique, so is every sense of style. Adding unique items like a tagless black, lace skirt or wicker shoes whose soles have been worn down add to this aspect of your style. Plus, if you’ve owned something for so long you don’t know when you got it, chances are it’s cute enough for you to have kept it around for so long. Take advantage of these cute pieces!

How To: This is the brilliance of twisted vintage pieces—all you have to do is wear them like you do any other item of clothing in your closet. A simple crochet top, like the one this Fashionista is wearing, can be worn with almost anything. Make the world (or your closet) your oyster.
