ALL IN THE DETAILS: Clothing in Depth

When we were younger, we were taught that detailing every noun in our five-paragraph essays was the best way to become an outstanding writer. Taking this lovely advice from my brilliant teachers into consideration, I have applied it to not only my writing but to my very own personal style. I must say adding details is one of the most valuable lessons I learned from my years in the education system. Whether it is showing an embellished collar, an embroidered shoe, an asymmetrical hem, or adding a bandana around the ankle, there is no limit to what you can do to show off or add to a thoughtful and well-constructed outfit.

I am an advocate for basics: always have been and always will be. Clothes that are transformed because of small details such as a pockets, zippers or holes are my favorite. With this outfit I really focused on my wardrobe pieces and how their small details could be highlighted. Ripped jeans will always be in, but I specifically love this black pair because they are ripped all the way up the leg and high-wasted, making them a statement piece. Do not be afraid to cut your jeans if they are too long! By cutting these jeans at ankle level they pair well with booties and have room to show off any fun socks. Also, I want touch on the fact that Goodwill can be your best friend on 99-cent days. I found my wonderfully wrinkled green button up at my local Goodwill store. I knew I wanted to pair the emerald green color and gold because they are cohesive but at the same time unconventional. As a college student cheap yet fashionable clothes at a good price are key.

Focusing on the details, my jacket wants to be considered as simple in the front and party in the back. The fact that there is an added peplum feature on the backside makes the jacket more feminine and less strictly structured. Regarding jewelry, I am such a fan of mixing metals. Gunmetal and gold are just as complimentary as the gold details in my black boots. Kendra Scott is my favorite jewelry designer at the moment so stacking her metals was an absolute must. Also, let’s not forget about the versatile gold sparkled socks. No matter what I choose to wear them with, I can make sure this small detail will be in any outfit I am sporting.

Keeping that in mind, adding too many detailed statement pieces can cause an outfit to become too busy. If you own a jacket with embroidery or color blocked pants then focus on making these the stand out pieces to your outfit. As we all know, thinking about complimenting the details in specific pieces can and should be fun! The challenge now is to think about everyday outfits that can be transformed by a simple add on. Good luck!
