ALL IN THE DETAILS: Heavy Metals

June 10th, 2015 at 2:00am

In high school, the thought of mixing gold and silver made me mildly nauseous. I had a set of jewelry for days when I wore gold rings and another for silver. My jewelry collection was out of hand. In college, when I started wearing my grandmother’s ring non-stop, mixing metals became inevitable. Now, I can be seen donning a mix of yellow, rose gold and silver pieces, just like this Fashionista does.

A neutral outfit is the perfect canvas for a palate of metals. By keeping the colors of her outfit monochromatic, she lets her jewelry stand on its own. A classy white button-up, high-waisted black jeans and a textured cardigan create great dimension, while an olive green jacket adds a pop of subtle color. As an added bonus, metallic buttons on the jacket add to the mixed metals. A rose gold monogram necklace sparkles at her collarbone, while a collection of bracelets dangles on her wrist. The face on her classic Fossil watch nods to the monochromatic outfit, and the charm bracelets in two different gold tones add sentimental value. Plus, they’re great conversation starters. Finally, an array of different metals and stones on her fingers add some color as well as a playful tone to an otherwise serious outfit.

How To: Fashionable and fun jewelry doesn’t have to break the bank, and it’s often fun to mix timeless pieces with less expensive ones. Monogram pieces like this one are great investments, and rings often come in fun packs that make mixing metals easy. Choose an Alex and Ani bangle that matches your interests (from sailing to your favorite pet) to complete the look!
