STYLE GURU STYLE: Traditional Trench

It’s been such a thrill getting to share with all of you a glimpse into my wardrobe and my sense of style. Fashion plays such an important role in our lives, consciously and subconsciously. There’s a reason that we fuss with what to wear for a job interview or spend hours trying on every dress in our closet before a first date. What we wear is a reflection of our mood, personality and desires.

But spring can be a difficult time for us Fashionistas in the north east with fluctuating temperatures and hard-to-predict precipitation. I used to feel so frustrated that my outfit was being hidden by my coa. It was not until a few years ago that I realized that my outerwear could be a part of my outfit! I wasn’t covering up my outfit but rather adding to it. Eudon Choi’s spring 2015 ready-to-wear collection is the perfect example of this. His collection demonstrates how all you need is the perfect jacket or coat to truly make an outfit. Forget about a standout accessory; all you need is a coat! I fell for his classic trenchcoats with ruffles and cinched waists, classic color palette and the mixing of masculine and feminine cuts.

The trenchcoat has always been a masculine yet dainty piece (think of Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s). By cinching the waist with a belt, a well-tailored trenchcoat can easily go from drab to fab. I rarely keep the belt that comes with a coat because I find that it doesn’t always suit my style or add the oomph that I’m hoping for. For this look, I paired my trenchcoat with a wide Betsey Johnson belt, which, along with my favorite black leather ankle boots, added edge to this classic look. Moreover, I cuffed my skinny jeans to better show off the boots. While I would have loved to have paired my look with dainty flats similar to those shown in Choi’s collection, I was forced to adapt the look for the climate, hence my black socks to keep my toes warm!

Every Fashionista and Fashionisto should own at least one outerwear piece, be it a peacoat or trench coat. It’s a standout investment piece that you’ll wear for years to come and, with the right accessories, can suit your every mood!
