STYLE GURU STYLE: Stuck in a Fashion Rut

Fashionista/os, I have to admit I am not a fan of fall or even winter weather. Around this time of the year when everyone is excited for layering, knee-high boots and shearling coats, I am losing interest daily. Sometimes, I feel like I’m just stuck in a fashion rut. The passion and excitement I have for expressing my personal style turns into dread of getting dressed for class, work or internships. As a result, my trendy, fashion-forward outfits turn into Nike slides and Adidas sweat pants.

To get myself out of this rut, I turn to street style for inspiration. The effortless but always ahead of trend looks give me the boost of confidence I need to look at the clothes in my closet in a different and more creative light. For this look, I was inspired by Rihanna’s always amazing street style. In this particular picture, she was sporting a pink, lace embroidered silk maxi dress along with black low-top Converse. The silky and sexy dress in contrast with sporty elements like dad caps or sneakers make for an easy way to recreate and chic look for any Fashionista.

On to my outfit: to take this silk maxi dress from formal to street, I tied a knot at the hem. For the classic juxtaposition element of street style, I threw on my old, dirty Converse. This embroidered black bomber is a great way to add feminine touches, but more importantly, to cover up in a cold classroom without ruining the look. And don’t let anyone tell you that carrying a backpack is not cool, because this leather backpack is just that! My entire outfit, excluding the Converse, are from a independently owned boutique in the Washington, DC area by the name of Violet Boutique. Another tip for you Fashionista/os is to take time and explore new places to shop. You may just find some gems like I did.

This fall, remember to switch it up, get creative and find the reason you love fashion again!
