STYLE GURU STYLE: So Not Over(alls) It

Overalls, dungarees, short-alls, whatever you prefer to call them, seem to be back and here to stay in the world of women’s fashion. This trend which made its entry well before the 21st century returned in the spring of 2014 and has yet to make an exit. Overalls walked the runways of a number of shows in the summer and spring 2014 seasons but were epitomized as a sporty, sexy trend in the DKNY spring 2014 collection. This runway show featured multiple dungaree looks that rocked the runway and made us all envious of this trendy yet completely functional look. Ever since then, this trend has been twisted and turned into so many different wearable options including leather short-alls, corduroy pinafores and still, the classic denim overall. Luckily for us, all of these fabulous options make it easy to take this trend from the runways to the streets.

Overalls are traditionally shown in some sort of denim. With all of the new great denim trends that have come our way this fall, it’s easy to make this trend current and modern. Instead of going for a skinny leg dungaree, try going for a flare leg or boyfriend fit. You can also steer away from the traditional denim and go for a suede or leather overall. Transitioning overalls from spring/summer to fall may also be easier than you think. Instead of pairing them with a bandeau or tank, try transitioning them with a chunky knit (another FABULOUS trend this fall) and combat boots!

The key to making overalls work for you is creating a look that is as modern as possible. As with any look that pulls inspiration from another decade of style, you do not want to look like you are stuck in a different era. Combine your overalls with pieces that are on trend this season and add a modern flare such as a fringe moto-inspired jacket or a pair of leather sneakers. You also have to make sure that the overalls fit you properly and show your body frame so that you avoid looking childish. All of these tips can help you transform this runway look into an everyday look!

I decided to pair my overalls with a chunky turtleneck and flat moto-inspired boots. I accessorized with my everyday watch and leather cross-body bag for a simply adorable daytime look. Get out there and rock your overalls this fall!

Get My Look: 1. Colored short-alls. 2. Combat boots. 3. Cross-body bag. 4. Menswear- inspired watch. 5. Chunky knit.
