STYLE GURU STYLE: Mixing and Matching

Fall is a time I find myself stepping out of my comfort zone. There are so many colors to play with and so many patterns to test out. As a designer, my creative juices are constantly flowing throughout my life, and I love when I can incorporate my love for colors and patterns in my everyday style.

Fall colors are always an exciting palette to work with. There are army greens, burnt oranges, plums and—of course—blacks and browns. When I walked into the mall, I found myself in love with this simple T-shirt. The burnt orange was such a gorgeous color; I was seeing it everywhere and I couldn’t resist. The struggle I find myself in a lot of the times is, “When in the world will I ever wear this top?” It’s a color out of my palette, but it was too gorgeous to pass up. So, I went for a funkier look, taking a bit away from the color and focusing more on emphasizing the pattern.

The most important thing to remember when mixing patterns is to make sure each pattern is equally spaced apart. For example, if the stripes on this shirt were even a centimeter closer to each other, this look wouldn’t work—it would be too much for the eyes, and you wouldn’t know where to look. When it comes to this outfit, the checks on the pants are boxed, a nice change from the typical plaid-like patterns we see. Quite frankly, I was surprised when I looked in the mirror and really liked what I put together. Since it was cold, I threw on a simple black leather jacket, a must for fall in my opinion. Then, I completed the look with a black bootie. These shoes can be paired with any look and are so comfortable to walk in. They’d most definitely be a great shoe to wear through an apple orchard or a pumpkin patch!
