STYLE GURU STYLE: Mess of Contradictions

September 30th, 2015 at 2:06am

My style is one big mess of contradictions. Being a girl means every single day is full of new emotions, with each emotion having its own style needs. In the span of just one week, my sartorial choices can range from minimalist to masculine to girly—often making me seem confused and even downright crazy. Because there is no rhyme or reason to the way I dress, I have had to start choosing the clothing I buy quite strategically. In other words, I try to pick pieces that have many of my favorite styles rolled into one. While the styling of these pieces can be quite tricky (i.e. overwhelming) because of their extreme versatility, I have found that looking to a few designers for inspiration always serves as a much-needed help to my conundrum. This week’s inspiration comes in the form of a talented designer named Rosetta Getty and a truly fabulous spring 2016 collection.

While my style is always changing, it remains simple and understated at its core—and Rosetta Getty obviously understands simplicity well. With only one elegant print thrown in between the black, white and burnt orange that made up the collection, the clothes were as uncomplicated in their hues as they were their design. And while the silhouettes were clean and statuesque, each look had an individual style to call its own. Contrasting between clean lines, large ruffles and many a flowing skirt, the entire collection was an indecisive Fashionista’s dream. The end result of Getty’s show was a moody yet cohesive collection, perfect for the girl who knows what she wants yet can’t make up her mind.

To recreate a look based on the spring 2016 collection, I felt I had no other choice but to keep it as simple as possible. I chose a black dress with a deep V-neck and a flowing hem, which kept with the contrast of both the soft and clean lines incorporated into Getty’s collection. After that, not much else was needed. For accessories, I infused a little sportiness with a pair of sneakers to make the look even more diverse. With a classic handbag and my hair thrown up into an easy bun, my look was finished in a few seconds flat.

Every girl out there knows that getting dressed is a struggle, no matter what the occasion. Throw in a little indecisiveness and a whole lot of moods, and you have a pretty much impossible situation on your hands. Yet with a collection like Rosetta Getty’s serving as inspiration, all your sartorial problems can be solved with a simple solution. She proves that pairing many different styles together doesn’t have to be complicated—in fact, it can be more elegant and easy than even the most simple of outfits.

Get My Look: 1. An easy black dress. 2. White sneakers. 3. A classic handbag.
