STYLE GURU STYLE: In Sweaters We Trust

“What is America for me? For me, America is New York City.” Born and raised in the fashion capital of the country, I’m sure this city was Marc Jacobs’ inspiration for his spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection. With stars hanging from fringe skirts, varsity letter jackets patched with American flags and high-waisted striped pants; he put a stylish patriotic twist on his newest line. The colors that steered his collection were obviously red, white and blue; however, he was able to combine these shades in a tasteful way.

Inspired by this Americana theme, I decided to show some patriotic pride through a recent outfit of mine. As I’ve mentioned before, I opt for neutral colored pieces since they’re effortlessly chic, yet compatible with a variety of colors and patterns. A plain black dress like this is a go-to piece of mine because I can easily dress it up or down with certain sweaters, shoes and accessories.

With my dress and shoes both being black, I needed a colorful piece to accentuate my outfit. Motivated by the Marc Jacobs collection, I chose a red and blue crotchet sweater. Just like his designs, I don’t overdo it, but instead use these colors to give my overall appearance a subtle patriotic feel.

Believe it or not, my simple, modish look is easy to achieve. Whether it’s body con, skater or classic style, a little black dress is a staple garment for any female. T-shirt dresses, along with fit and flare, are among my favorite kinds of dresses since I’m able to quickly revamp each to fit my mood or the occasion.

I paired a large cardigan sweater with my dress, since no article of clothing represents the fall season like an oversized sweater does. The key to styling the best sweater is choosing one that makes you feel confident, as well as comfortable. As shoes are the finishing touch to any outfit, it only makes sense to top this look off with my favorite black heeled booties.
