STYLE GURU STYLE: Checks, Please!

Imagine: rack after rack of clothing, divided by style, separated by color and surrounded by colored bins. Soft early 2000s pop plays in the background; this is my dream world. Okay, so most normal humans’ dream worlds involve a chocolate fountain or Prince Harry, but mine is just your average thrift store. Since I learned to correctly pronounce “Louboutin”, I’ve been digging through metal baskets, flipping through plastic hangers and lifting tags of tossed-aside clothing, waiting hopefully to stumble upon a vintage nugget of gold. In my decade of popping tags, I’ve gotten many a hand cramp, purchased a few too many Cosby sweaters and gladly added to my ever-growing collection of musty-smelling frocks from eras before my time.

Since coming to college, thrift shopping has continued to be my saving grace, both for my mental health and my wallet (because what broke college kid wants to spend $30 on a dress when you can spend $3?) Having made my rounds a few times in my local thrift store last week, I was about to surrender unusually empty-handed…and then I saw it: Double-breasted purple check plaid with velvet cuffs and Fran Drescher-esque shoulder pads, the florescent lights shining upon from the heavens (or the ceiling of America’s Thrift.) The perfect suit-dress, and coincidentally, a piece that looked straight out of one of my favorite fall/winter collections.

Unsurprisingly, Karl Lagerfeld dropped jaws again with Chanel’s fall/winter 2015-2016 ready-to-wear collection which oozed with classic Chanel glamour and sophistication. The collection appeared to be a modernization of Gabrielle Chanel’s signature look, the tweed suit. Appearing in quilted silk, plaid and tweed, the enviable skirt and jacket combos were paired with retro cap-toed sling backs. Being a lover of the classy silhouette and mad for plaid, I transformed my ’80s suit dress into a Coco classic with simple heels and vintage pearlescent beaded earrings. I completed my look with sleek hair and dark lips, because a girl should be classy and fabulous, right?
