STYLE GURU STYLE: Borrowed From The Boys

Menswear for women has been a runway trend for quite awhile now, yet it is just now having its widespread moment in street style. Vetements fall 2016 collection embodies the classic school girl look with a much tougher edge through the use of oversized menswear pieces. I have such an affinity for menswear because of how it evolves. Men’s fashion is not inundated with fleeting trends like women’s is.

Due to this, most of the clothes in style are timeless and just as relevant as they were 40 decades ago. This fact also promotes the valuing of quality over quantity. It is a thousand times better to have one meticulously fitted, versatile suit that you treat as an investment than three suits that are loose or short in the sleeves or made from cheap material. I try to maintain a similar approach to my own wardrobe, which is probably why more and more men’s items are seeping into my closet.

While this trend could be taken to its full extent, my personal style prefers to have a balance of masculine and feminine. With this in mind, I started piecing together an outfit inspired by the Vetements fall 2016 collection. First, I donned the ultimate wardrobe staple, a men’s white button-up shirt. Then I paired it with a waistcoat to add some structure that is a characteristic to menswear. I added my feminine flair with a black skirt, a leopard belt and gold accessories.

I infused the look with a hint of school girl flair, copying the knee socks and heeled ankle boots straight from the runway. Anytime I put on knee socks, I am transported back to my uniformed days of high school, feeling quite in my element. The Vetements show inspired me to head in a direction I have been wanting to try out more. This is not the last time you will see me wearing a look borrowed from the boys.

Get My Look: 1. Classic button-up. 2. A menswear-inspired vest. 3. Knee socks.
