STYLE GURU BIO: Nicole Collins

Hello everyone! I am Nicole and I’m thrilled to be writing as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista. I currently live in Michigan and I commute to Oakland Community College, but I am transferring to University of Michigan to study business. My desire is to follow my passion for fashion and start up my own boutique. I love the idea of majoring in fashion merchandising. However, I am always open to exploring other potential careers in the industry.

I work full-time as a stylist at American Eagle Outfitters. I’ll have been there for three years this September. I genuinely love my job (not just for the ridiculously cute clothes). I am fortunate to be able to connect with and get to know customers in such a short period of time. I outfit men and women to find what they feel comfortable in and what looks best for them for all kinds of occasions—my favorite is adding onto their wardrobe and helping shape their own personal style. It’s very rewarding to make someone’s day by putting together their favorite outfit.

Working at such a popular clothing store also keeps me up on current fashion trends. I am always inspired by what’s going on around me, so my style changes day to day. For my own personal style, it is constantly evolving. I love mixing styles together to stand out. One day I’ll dress classic chic emphasizing comfort with strong colors, while the next day, I’ll wear monochromatic street style with feminine details. I truly believe an outfit can effect one’s mood and make one feel more confident.

Now for the look I chose—this look is a casual day-to-night out outfit that I adore. I paired a black keyhole babydoll top that ties in the back with a light distressed boyfriend jean. For my top, this feminine blouse has a breezy silhouette, accentuates the bust and shows off a rising trend, the open back. As written by Rachel Waldman featured in Vogue, “The open back top is a sophisticated and subtly sexy antidote to the crop top that has been celebrated on the runway for several seasons, from Céline to Proenza Schouler.” For my bottoms, I chose these distressed boyfriend jeans because they are a statement jean that gives an edgy vibe to every outfit. I completed this look by pairing it with black heeled booties, a black floppy hat and a suede bow choker to give a western twist that can be altered for day-to-night wear.

I can not wait to meet new people, write about individual’s unique styles and share my passion for fashion with all of you. Join me on my exciting journey this semester as a Style Guru!
