STYLE GURU BIO: Michelle Barrera

Hi all! My name is Michelle Barrera, native New Yorker and uprising senior at Pace University in Manhattan. I am a Communications major with a minor in Marketing and hope to go into the Public Relations field and Brand Management. This is my first time interning for CollegeFashionista and am very much looking forward to this new experience.

The word fashion tends to drag along with it many assumptions and generalities, such as who it’s for and who can create it. Meanwhile, they are simply untrue. Fashion means something different to everyone and can be produced by anyone. To me it is merely just one of the many forms of self-expression, it can be anything you make it and is never defined as one thing. It is also constantly changing and trends travel through cycles, coming and going. At the moment, I am very into a minimal chic look, with solid colors and maybe some patterns but not too loud. Scrolling through Pinterest, my pins and likes will definitely include urban chic styles to a little bohemian accent as well. I try to incorporate a little of urban tastes plus casual plus feminine and make it my own. All in all, you have to be comfortable in your own skin and part of that reflects in how you present yourself.

Some of my favorite style icons at the moment are Miroslava Duma, Leandra Medine, Vanessa Hong, Danielle Bernstein and Alexa Chung; just to name a few. When I’m not listening to The Weeknd, BANKS or searching new sounds on Soundcloud, I find myself sweating it out in a spin class, songwriting, or visiting new places.

For this outfit, I was going for casual chic. Denim jackets and jeans has been my favorite recently, especially ripped boyfriend jeans. Stripped shirts not only go well with this type of denim, but an oversized stripped shirt gives it the comfortable chic feel.

I’ve always been drawn to the visual presentation and experience of things and love to grab inspiration from anything creatively stimulating. Whether I’m in Manhattan on my way to class or out and about in public, my eye always skims through and admires outfits even from strangers; all carrying a different statement. I hope what I contribute to CollegeFashionista is just as enjoyable as the time I’ll have sharing a glimpse of my tastes and likes. Stay tuned every Monday!
