STYLE GURU BIO: Madeleine D’Angelo

Hello there Fashionistas!  I’m Madeleine D’Angelo, and I am excited to begin my first semester as a Style Guru for CollegeFashionista.

I come from Maryland, but I spend most of the year in the blustery city of Boston where I study English and French in my sophomore year at Boston College.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve loved playeing dress-up, first constructing costumes from old scarves and fantastic dresses borrowed from my mom’s closet.  As the years passed, my love for fashion grew as I realized that—aside from facial expressions, which can oftentimes be misconstrued—my outfits were one of the few things in this world that allowed me to express myself without saying a word.

My passion for reading and photography grew alongside my love for clothing, and I began immersing myself in the world of fashion and design whenever possible.  Although my style is constantly evolving, the work of designers such as Thom Browne (and his menswear inspired pieces) and Rosie Assouline (with her completely unconventional aesthetic) enchants me daily.

I draw inspiration from the writing, styling, and photography in any fashion magazine or blog that I can get my hands on.  The way we dress each day allows us to express who they truly believe ourselves to be, or who they want to become, in the most nuanced of ways.

Although my day-to-day style ranges from minimalist to eccentric, based on how I feel in the morning. I try to work hidden messages into many of the outfits that I put together.  But some messages are more obvious than others.  For this more playful look, looping white embroidery clearly spells out the message GOOD VIBES on the back of my distressed denim jacket, a detail that elevates this more standard piece to something unique and playful.

With an essentially simple jacket to top off the look, I felt free to add more excitement to the outfit with the base layers of the skirt and sweater.  After choosing this patterned, sailor-inspired skirt, I decided on the perhaps unexpected pairing of a bright red sweater. The sweater’s classic cut and solid color creates the perfect balance with the more whimsical skirt, and its vivid color pops out from under the denim jacket.

With such a vibrant outfit, more minimal accessories prove best.  A sleek, black-leather backpack not only serves as the perfect, on-trend replacement for my usual tote, but it also highlights my dark toned patent-leather loafers.

For a finishing touch, natural lipstick and delicate jewelry serve as the perfect details to complete my look.

Thank you all for reading, and I cannot wait for the fashion-filled months to come.
