STYLE GURU BIO: Katie Hickman

My name is Katie and this is my first semester as a Style Guru. I am a sophomore at Montclair State University in New Jersey. I major in fashion studies with a minor in fashion merchandising. My whole life I have known I wanted to work in the fashion industry.

Ever since I can remember, my mom-mom would ask me what I want to be when I grow up and every time I had the same answer; I want to be a fashion designer. When I was a little kid, I would play dress up and give her and the rest of my family fashion shoots with whatever my crazy mind could come up with. She always told me that I was perfect for the job and to go for it. Her words “you are perfect for that” has been my motivation for living my dream.

Fashion has always meant more to me than just throwing clothes on that match. I have always enjoyed it a little bit more than my friends and took my outfits a little bit more seriously. I love that fashion is a way to show the world who you are. It is a way of expression for people and for me. My outfits will differ as the week goes on because I don’t have just one style. I just put on what I am feeling works for me and go on with my day. No matter what, I will always remember to wear confidence with every outfit I have.

As for what I am wearing. I decided to show you a few of my go-to pieces that I usually tend to wear more than I should. The gray suede knee-length boots were the perfect find when I bought them about a year ago, and I won’t let them ever retire if I can help it. The blanket scarf is the perfect accessory to hide that double chin (am I right?). It also keeps me pretty warm on the cold days here at Montclair. My last go-to piece is just a hat in general. I usually tend to go for a baseball cap, but today I decided to amp it up a little and go for the floppy hat just to add a little something-something to my outfits. I tend to go for the more out there looks and I’m not very subtle when it comes to clothes.

I am looking forward to showing you my monthly finds around campus! I hope you find my inspiration as inspirations for you!
