STYLE GURU BIO: Elizabeth Kim

Hello everyone! My name is Elizabeth Kim, and I am a sophomore at the University of California, Los Angeles. I am majoring in communication studies and hope to pursue a career in the publishing business, possibly as a writer or as creative director (inspired by Ugly Betty) for a fashion magazine. Perhaps I’ve watched The Devil Wears Prada and imagined myself in Anne Hathaway’s shoes a few too many times.

Many of my family members have worked in the retail world, so I grew up drooling over their sewing skills, fashion sketches and company fabrics. However, their jobs, often involving hands-on hard work, were not as glamorous as you’d imagine. Because I come from the calm suburbs of Diamond Bar, I dream of living in New York someday, amongst the skyscrapers and bustling city streets.

As you can tell, I love to romanticize and that definitely helps with my creativity in writing. Other than writing stories, I would say my main hobby is shopping (yes, shopping is a hobby). Madewell is my all-time favorite store. Their clothing is simple yet classic, and I believe that simplicity is key in creating a polished look. On the other hand, I also have a fondness for feminine and bohemian designs. In my opinion, you don’t have to restrict yourself to one style. In fact, fashion, as an art form, is all about experimenting and playing around with different items. Style is like Play-Doh; you can shape and mold it to create a completely different look. You may feel casual one day and dressy another.

These are some other fun facts about me: I don’t enjoy sports that involve aiming; I would much rather sit on a couch and watch Sherlock or Modern Family. So that you don’t think of me as a lazy slob, I will say that I do like hiking and running. I spend most of my time with friends laughing, going on (food) adventures and visiting hipster cafes. I listen to Kodaline’s album on repeat and read books that I may be too old for (for example: John Green and Rainbow Rowell). My favorite scent would have to be lavender because it has a soothing effect, and I get stressed often. I am addicted to apple cider and stationery.

My outfit here represents my two favorite colors to wear: white and black. During the fall, you can catch me in sweaters and booties half of the time. Actually, call me crazy, but I strap on boots even during the summer—my shoe collection mostly consists of boots. You can purchase these black leather booties from Steve Madden and the cozy, white knit sweater from Club Monaco. Since we are still in the midst of autumn heat over here in California, I paired these pieces with a classic black skirt. I finished my look off with some gold rings and my first watch (ever) from Marc Jacobs.

I’m so excited to start this fall and see all of your RAD outfits!
