STYLE GURU BIO: Denise Taveras

Hello Fashionistas/os! My name is Denise Taveras. I was born in New York and in my early teens moved to Pennsylvania. I’ve been living in this cute little suburb called Muhlenberg, where I double major at Albright College in Fashion Merchandising and International Business. Since my early years, fashion has always been much more than just looking nice, it has been a way to express who I am.

All throughout my childhood, fashion has always been where my heart is. I remember watching America’s Next Top Model and Project Runway with my aunt who was like an older sister to me, and how we would draw fashion illustrations. Although I had no style back in those days and my illustrations were lopsided, every time I think about how much my aunt influenced me I can’t help but smile. She is the reason why fashion holds a special place in my heart and nothing can ever take that.

Fashion was not just a pastime, but lifestyle for me. Throughout my youth I have found myself playing the fashion game and I’ve been able to not only stay on top of trends, but also have a sense for what is up-and-coming in the fashion industry. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by fellow Fashionistas like Amrezy, Teni Panosian and the Kardashians.

Although I’ve had a ton of fun with fashion over the years, not every look I have experimented with was a successful one. Some looks were a bit eccentric. Each time I think back to when I first started playing with makeup, I can’t help but laugh because of the mess I would make on my face. My mom would tell me how adorable I was because she knew I had tried. Then I went through a phase where I wore every color possible in one outfit. Some of the outfits actually looked decent, but when I look at older pictures I just wonder what went through my mind as I was getting ready to go out.

Having a wardrobe of mostly neutrals, I’ve been able to transform day looks into trendy outfits to go out with friends. Since I was a color specialist last year at Smart Style Salon located in Temple, Pennsylvania, I have acquired a lot of black clothes and its been fun playing with dress pants, joggers, and high waisted pants; to skater skirts, pencil skirts and crop tops. But some of my go-to ways to throw color into my outfits consist of many lipstick colors from pink to blue and purple just to name a few. As far as accessories go, I love scarves, necklaces, bracelets, watches and rings of all colors. So to keep it short, I may keep it simple by wearing more neutrals, but I definitely can get colorful with my accessories.
