STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: It’s All Just Sport

I’m going to be honest, I was a bit skeptical about athletic style. This is mostly because I have seen polyester running shorts worn to just about every occasion. It is hard to not picture sportswear in terms of Sporty Spice or a poster child for Nike. Finding a fashion-forward outfit that is comfortable and a sporty outfit that is stylish is a hard balance to strike. However, I had hope that someone could show me it was possible.

This Fashionisto convinced me that a hoodie and sneakers is the new chic. The minimalism of an all-black look provides great cohesion between styles. His Zara neoprene-like hooded jacket combines the best qualities of utilitarian sportswear and sleek, minimal design. The vintage Vans provide a cool-kid, fun pop to the outfit. A cropped, tailored black pant ties the look together and provides a good balance to the sporty style.

Along with being a smart and sleek outfit, it looks rather comfy—a rarity in the fashion realm. The Y-3 by Yohji Yamamoto fall 2015 menswear collection reflects this utilitarian philosophy. This specific look from the collection strikes a balance between athletic sensibility and a modern feel.

Sportswear is not about looking ready for a spontaneous sprint, but instead displaying the highest level of effortless style. Toned down and tailored clothing in classic, athletic shapes can complement any type of wardrobe. So even if there is no force in the universe strong enough to compel you to do anything athletic, try throwing on those tennis shoes anyway.
