STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Clothes Have No Gender

September 14th, 2016 at 2:10am

Lately, I have been LOVING the androgynous fashion I’ve seen in haute couture. Gender-neutral clothing has been allowing people to let go of those associated restrictions which used to be set in stone. Those old masculine-versus-feminine rules are officially outdated and the time has come to wear whatever you desire. As for this Fashionisto, he’s wearing a trend which has been seen all over the runways and all around street style this fall: pastel pink.

This casually chic outfit is key for the fast paced environment college students put themselves into each fall. Along with the distressed jeans this Fashionisto is wearing, his camel felt hat with black accenting and pastel pink thermal shirt are perfect for those chilly days walking around campus. Gaining inspiration from Chanel and Soludos, these platform espadrilles provide the ultimate comfort for travel this fall.

Key trends this fall for menswear include gender-bending outfits which embrace plaid jackets, silky bombers and reds/pinks. As the runways become more focused on different kinds of fashion and less suit-focused for men, individuality has been sparking and catching on. It’s 2016… a time where the rules which have been applied to gender can be broken and retouched to create something incredible and attractive to the wearer and admirer.

For example, taking on the forms of jackets and sweaters, all kinds of fabrics are now being fabricated together to construct pieces with a touch of arts and crafts from the ’90s. Missoni, Prada and Ermenegildo Zegna showcase some of these sweaters phenomenally. Another trend this fall would have to be focused around the West. Western wear has been making an appearance this year and fall won’t be shorthanded of it. Ralph Lauren, Valentino and Paul & Joe complete this style with bolo ties, cowboy shirts and calfskin jackets. Puffy jackets, shaggy jackets and tartan jackets will all make an appearance on those obsessed with this fashion house we thrive in.

Inspired by this Fashionisto, I couldn’t be more excited to see what fashion brings to the streets this season. I’ll be on the lookout for more sartorial looks everyday, especially pertaining to androgyny. Samuel Taylor Coleridge said, “The truth is, a great mind must be androgynous.” What a person is on the outside is easily and greatly reflected from who they are on the inside.
