STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Anorak Adventures

May 20th, 2016 at 2:10am

Trends in womenswear are usually fairly obvious and largely discussed, while what’s trendy in menswear can prove to be more elusive. Exploring what’s popular for men is not only helpful for those Fashionistos out there who are looking for inspiration, but can also help us ladies who want something a little fresher this spring than just the rote “florals” suggestion.

GQ references anorak jackets as one of the biggest menswear trends this spring, citing Z Zegna, Brioni, Lou Dalton, Wooyoungmi and Hardy Amies collections as prime examples of practical clothing items being used in style. It is the practicality of the anorak that makes it such a perfect piece to add to any closet. As April showers bring May flowers and we have yet to achieve 80 degree temperatures, an anorak jacket seamlessly works both with day-to-day life and current trends.

Anorak jackets are made in a variety of lengths, material and colors, making it a style of jacket that’s flattering to just about anyone. In the case of this Fashionisto, the light color of the jacket plays against the darker colors of his pants and especially his sweater, causing it to stand out while still flowing with the rest of his look. For a bolder Fashionista or Fashionisto, bright colors or even translucent jackets make dramatic statements. More conservative dressers can find comfort in more neutral tones and let smaller hints of color elsewhere in their outfit be their additional flair.

This Fashionisto played it safe with an aforementioned neutral color, leaving him with a solid piece that can be useful not only in his spring wardrobe, but across seasonal wardrobes. Hopefully we can take his cue and find the perfect anorak that will have us dressing in vogue (or in this case GQ) come rain or come shine.
