STYLE ADVICE: Capsule Wardrobe

In every pair of twins, there is a Zack and a Cody, a Phoebe and a Roxxi and most importantly a Michael and a Lindsay Bluth. One of the twins always seems to have it together while the other stumbles through life. For example, while Michael the sensible banana stand owner holds the family together, Lindsay is a raging shopaholic. In the case of my sister and me, you can catch me walking out of the mall with two pairs of sequin pants and the nagging feeling of buyer’s remorse, while she has a denim skirt and a wallet twice as fat as mine.

Her secret you may ask—a capsule wardrobe. She only chose pieces that she knows will mix and match well with all of the others. For example, in this outfit she is wearing a pair of fishnet stockings with a frayed denim skirt. The next day she may wear them peeking out of the bottom of her pants as pseudo socks or through the holes of her distressed mom jeans. This seemingly non-versatile piece can be styled in countless ways with a little creativity. This goes to show that you can put together an arsenal of interesting outfits using a few key pieces.

In this outfit, she picked her black and white zip-up polo as the jump-off piece from which to build the rest of the look. She then incorporated denim-on-denim. Lastly, she added some edge with a pair of fishnets and monochromatic black Converse.

Although not everyone has the self-control to resist pieces that follow fleeting trends, this tip will clear a little space in your closet while keeping your wallet full.
