Fall is my favorite season to experiment with makeup, especially lipstick—there’s just something about a pretty berry lip that brightens up my mood. But how do you pull off darker colors if you’re a tried-and-true neutral-lip girl? Amelia Johnson, Kent State University class of 2020, explained to me that keeping your makeup balanced is key. “To make bold lips more approachable, I recommend keeping the rest of your makeup neutral and minimal.”

If you’re not interested in bold makeup but want your look to last all day, MacKinley Lutes-Adlhoch, Arizona State University class of 2020, says, “My secret to long-lasting lipstick is setting it with translucent powder. This actually won’t make it matte, but it keeps everything locked in place for hours.” And when you’re feeling self-conscious, Veronica Quesenberry, University of Florida class of 2018, offers this advice: “Wearing lipstick isn’t about worrying what other people may think or if it’s too much for a Tuesday. If you like it, you can pull it off.” Okay, so now that we’ve proven this lipstick color really is perfect for anyone, are you ready to give it a try? Let’s jam!

go linerless with a juneberry shade

This muted tone is a must-have for fall and, thankfully, incredibly simple to achieve. Skip the liner and swipe on Nyx Soft Matte Lip Cream in Mauve ($7) for a sophisticated look that’s easy to reapply.

elevate your look with a pop of cranberry

If you’re looking to dress up a casual outfit in a simple way, you can’t go wrong with this bright red hue. Choose a gloss like Nars Cosmetics Velvet Lip Glide ($26) in place of lipstick to make your lips appear a little more moisturized.

pair fresh skin with a strawberry hue

Step aside, Millennial Pink—this strawberry tone is taking over. A bright shade is perfection paired with dewy skin, so re-create this look with Glossier Perfecting Skin Tint ($26) and a swipe of Urban Decay Cosmetics Vice Lipstick ($17).

add color that lasts with a huckleberry stain

You’ll need a product that lasts all day during the holiday festivities, which is why lip stains are your new best friend. For extra drama, go for a deep burgundy option with Yves Saint Laurent Tatouage Couture Liquid Matte Lip Stain ($36).

keep it subdued with pink pepperberry

If you’re a minimalist at heart, this muted tone is for you. Keep it precise by outlining your lips with Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat Re-Size & Re-Shape Lip Liner ($22), then fill in the rest with the matching shade of Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Luminous Modern-Matte Lipstick ($34).
