ALL IN THE DETAILS: Modern Retro Vibes

September 22nd, 2016 at 2:00am

Kicking it old school is the new school because retro vibes are totally back in this fall. Distressed denim decked out with patches, choker necklaces, round sunglasses and bold prints are staple ’90s trends that are creeping back in. I love this trend because most of what follows this style are cheap detailed basics that you can incorporate into any outfit.

This Fashionista followed these retro vibes by pairing a simple black dress with a denim jacket. Thrift stores are a great place to find the perfect denim jacket for a low price. Try pairing a simple dress like hers, with a looser fitting jacket for a more relaxed “boyfriend” look. The things that drive this outfit towards the retro trend are definitely the various accessories. This Fashionista wore a mix of stackable bracelets. These are great because they not only work for this type of look, but they can also be worn separately in different outfits for a more elegant feel giving them a lot of wear and versatility.

Her long necklace helps bring more interest to this outfit as well. Another great aspect to bring to this pairing would be a choker necklace. Not only is this a super ’90s thing, but it also adds a cool edge to the ensemble.

Do not be afraid to go all out with bold prints as well. These leaf patterned sneakers bring so much to an otherwise simple outfit. By going with a printed shoe rather than a solid one, you are certainly “kicking” it old school and definitely drawing some good attention.

Polaroids are no longer a thing of the past, and who said your camera can not be an accessory? This is by far my most favorite touch to add to an outfit. It acts a a cute purse, but whenever you feel the Polaroid moment is right, your camera is right there for you to snap away. I love collecting Polaroid pictures to hang on my wall, but if Polaroids are not really your thing, a cute rounded cross-body bag is the way to go. Try something with fringe or denim to bring everything together. Even spice it up with a leather bag if you are feeling edgy.

Do not try to make it too complicated because this retro ’90s trend was about throwing together all your favorite things. Keep it all in the details and remember to always be bold, daring and RAD.

Hello Fashionistas! My name is Abigail Shatrau. I am currently a junior at SUNY Oneonta. I am majoring in Fashion Merchandising, currently enrolled in the 3 in 1 program with F.I.T. This means that I spend 3 rad years at SUNY Oneonta and then finish out my school at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I am 20 years old and I am from the small city of Oswego, New York. I have a twin brother and an older sister that I continue to look up to and strive to be like. Besides my passion for fashion I am extremely intrigued by nutrition and health. I love being outdoors, going on walks, running, and overall just being active. I recently transitioned into a vegan lifestyle and that has been quite a big step and change in my life. I am loving everything about it so far and wouldn't change back for anything. Growing up in a small town can make it hard to figure out the full extent to which fashion expression can be reached. However, ever since I was little I loved to do everything artsy, crafty, and creative. I am not one to think up many original ideas of my own, but what I love about my major is that it can be all about the detail work, like the little things that matter, and its about collaborating with people, blossoming ideas through one another. To me that is so important because art, creativity, and everything fashion should be shared. We are all unique individuals that have unique ways of thinking and expressing ourselves. Just like College Fashionista, spreading ideas is what makes life more interesting and it brings us closer with people who love those same things as well. I hope that I do not let any of you down in my journey as a College Fashionista, I wish you all the best! Bisous, Abigail Shatrau
