ALL IN THE DETAILS: Minimalist Fashion

May 9th, 2016 at 2:10am

One thing I love about my campus is that no matter what time of year it is or what the weather is, it is a guarantee that “Bisons” will be dressed to the nines. It’s almost like a challenge. We dare the weather to be “bad”, and when it is, we take that as a fashion challenge.

This Fashionista stayed true to the Howard way. Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor an overcast sky can keep a Howard Fashionista at bay. We salute the challenge, accept and conquer it. Whether it be a simple pair of jeans and a T-shirt or a sequence gown, there is a runway on Florida and H. From casual to couture, the ladies and men of Howard University are a fashion barometer.

This Fashionista is wearing a black maxi dress. The dress, by itself, is quite lovely. The accoutrements that she added and her personality make the lovely black maxi an extraordinary ensemble. Given the rainy weather that we have been having all week, her outfit is appropriate with the color and even the styling. But what I truly love about this outfit are the details, which while minimal, really made the outfit stand out.

This Fashionista’s glasses and necklace made me want to capture her outfit because in a world where so many girls own black maxi dresses, it is great to see someone take this trend and turn it into something special. Her glasses (which automatically made me think “You’re a wizard Harry”) are what really stood out to me. Her glasses give her a fresh new look. This look is sophisticated and really minimal at the same time.

Another part of her outfit that adds a lot of sophistication to her outfit is her penguin necklace. I love her necklace because it is simple, but at the same time it isn’t plain. It gives the look a little something extra. I love this look because it is a minimalist look, and this Fashionista knew it. However, it was the small details that took it from being Plain Jane to sophisticated minimalist, and that’s what makes it special.

How To: To get this look, take your favorite black maxi dress and pair it with a small pendant necklace and a chic pair of glasses.
