ALL IN THE DETAILS: Cultural Chic

When passing by a stranger on the street or, in other words, a Fashionista/o, what is it about them that makes you turn your head and give them a second glance? Is it the combination of the colors and uniqueness of their clothes, is it the way they choose to accessorize or is it the energy that shines through from their appearance? It takes talent and confidence to create the ultimate Fashionista/o. This one in particular really expresses her cultural flare through her threads and jewelry.

I came across this Fashionista during VCU’s International Cultural Festival this past weekend. So many different people from all around were flaunting their spirits and vivid poise from their personal lifestyles. Apart from her colorful and vibrant dress that she was wearing, what really caught my eye was her jewelry she exhibited on her face. Her septum’s gold, bejeweled piercing really brought her exotic look together. Extravagant piercings are extremely popular here in Richmond, especially when it comes to nose rings. They are a huge fashion accessory with females in the Indian culture. They also go with all sorts of styles like Richmond’s “hipsters,” the grungy look or, my personal favorite, bohemian flare. It just all depends how you want to express your own urbanity and personal style.

She wore a bohemian, triangle necklace to coordinate with the colors of the dress and the overall flare of her look. This Fashionista’s choice of shoes not only dominates her apparel but is a high demand this spring and summer. Birkenstocks are on everyone’s wish list this season. You can pair them with anything such as shorts, jeans, dresses, etc. They’re the ultimate go-to shoe to keep yourself cute, casual and comfy.

How To: Attending a festival this summer and don’t know what to wear? It’s all about expressing your inner spirit animal. Be extravagant, go above and beyond. Accessorize with some fake jewelry and temporary, metallic body tattoos. Become that inner gypsy you always dreamed to be.
