ALL IN THE DETAILS: Baby Got Blue

One of the most interesting things about fashion is how easily the “rules” can be broken. We are taught that there is a color wheel made up of primary colors: red, yellow and blue and then secondary colors: green, orange and purple. Usually, we try not to get too out of hand by throwing together any crazy colors. We even try our best not to wear any two colors that are directly next to each other on the wheel because we all know that clashing is a total no-no. Nevertheless, we must understand that fashion is art, and there are no wrongs in art. In the real fashion world, there is no such thing as a rule, and designers break whichever boundary they choose.

After thinking about it for a second (maybe more like 19 years), I realized that the “laws of the color wheel” are completely arbitrary. If a designer is allowed to make a dress that violates those rules and still manages to sell it for thousands of dollars, then we are able to do so as well.

That is why I had to stop this Fashionista on the street. Her all-blue outfit doesn’t necessarily obey the rules. Starting with her navy blue dress, I would like to comment on how she made the focus of her look the darkest shade. By doing this, it creates a base or a foundation; the rest of the outfit is centered around it. Next, her choice to throw on a denim button-down is brilliant because it not only keeps the color blue in the picture, but it also adds variety because of its material. She then adds the funky necklace, which is perfect because the assortment of blue beads helps tie the blue dress and shirt together. She even made the necklace herself! Lastly, the navy bag brings the entire outfit full circle because it repeats the same color of the dress.

Next time you think you are breaking any fashion rules, think back to this girl, and rock your originality like she did!

How To: Not into dresses but still want to wear something similar? Try wearing jeans and any navy top! With the slightest bit of effort, you will have everyone complimenting you.
