STYLE GURU BIO: Sally Khomikh

Dear readers,

I am too excited to welcome you into my fall semester as a new Style Guru representative! Follow my monthly posts throughout fall semester and get inspired to challenge and expand on your current style.

I am a sophomore at Chapman University, majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Advertising. I love experimenting with different fashion trends by wearing a mixture of bold patterns, bright colors and funky jewelry. I am slightly obsessed with the color pink, and feel as though a perfect pair of shoes can always serve as a therapeutic device.

In 2012, I began working at the San Francisco Children’s Art Center, where I became incredibly interested in the way art plays a role in shaping a child’s developmental attributes. I later used the experimental and abstract techniques encouraged at my work, and applied similar mediums in my own pieces as a junior and senior in high school. I fell in love with the innocence and freedom found in a child’s work of art, and felt a need to experience it for myself as a young woman heading into adult world.

The summer before senior year of high school, I was awestruck by the Met’s costume exhibit, Punk: Chaos to Couture. I found similarities between the distressed/chaotic trends of the punk era, and the freedom expressed by the three-year-olds I taught at the Art Center. I then began combining my love for fine art with my passion for fashion, design and history during my Senior Independent Research Project titled Rotten Status Quo.

After spending a year studying and embodying the punk movement, I truly believe in fashion being treated as an art form. Studying punk fashion pushed me to pursue a career in design, while fashion continues to play an important role in my life as a creative thinker. Throughout this new semester, I hope my posts will encourage everyone to see fashion through a lens in which art, culture and history can be examined.

As this summer of friendship, hard work and music festivities comes to an end, a new and exciting semester of fashion begins!

Think pink and keep Chappy!
