STYLE ADVICE OF THE WEEK: Grayscale

You may still associate dressing all in one color with the chaos of early 2000s fashion, but today’s monochromatic trend is anything but outdated. The key to making monochromatic outfits work is to mix slightly different shades of one color and to play around with textures.  However, try to keep the variety of hues to a minimum or else it may not appear as deliberately monochromatic.

This Fashionisto’s grayscale outfit reflected the rainy weather we’ve been having in New York since the start of spring. Wearing pieces that ranged from heather gray to black, he creates a casual look that is far from gloomy and boring.

Monochromatic outfits also present the perfect opportunity to showcase statement pieces from your closet. The minimalism of this Fashionisto’s outfit lends extra attention to his accessories; his army green canvas tote bag stands out against the subdued tones of his ensemble, as do his gold watch and bracelets. Yet he keeps it fairly simple as to not take away from the effect of the monochrome.

He chooses a light gray Nike sweatshirt and wears a marled knit lapel coat on top. The coat and beanie are the same shade while the sweatshirt is just barely lighter. Although the jeans and boots are black and not gray, I feel that it still counts as monochrome because they are hues from the same color family.

If you’re still skeptical about trying this bold trend, steal some style tips from this Fashionisto. Ease your way into monochrome with muted colors rather than jumping right into bright shades. You may be wary to rock a red top and bottom right away, so opt for gray or black like in this outfit.
