BEAUTY BAR: Braiding Out

Braiding hair has been an iconic tradition for centuries. There were the Egyptians that used to braid their hair, Janet Jackson’s long braids in Poetic Justice and, more recently, Beyoncé’s cornrows (If you haven’t seen the “Lemonade” music video, who are you?).

Clearly, with that breadth of history, when I saw this Fashionista I instantly knew she was channeling the iconic styles of the past. Braids come in a variety of styles and colors. They can be long or short. You can get chunky, jumbo braids or go smaller with micro braids. Plus, not only do braids look great, but they act as a protective style for your natural hair. One benefit of braids is that they are low maintenance; once they are installed they can last up to a month.

Additionally, braids can promote hair growth and stop heat damage. I don’t know about you, but any beauty style that cuts down my time getting ready and can improve my hair health is a win.

To highlight her braids, this Fashionista keeps her outfit casually grunge. She pairs a boxy graphic tank with her favorite pair of distressed denim. Her monochromatic accessories pull the look together; her black hat frames her face, accenting both her hair and classic bold, red lipstick.

The thin belt around her waist breaks up the bagginess that the tank and boyfriend fit of her jeans creates. Rounding out the look, this Fashionista’s Chelsea Boots give her the perfect balance of height and cool.

So who are you planning to be this summer, Janet or Beyoncé? The choice is yours, and the possibilities for braids are endless.

What’s on the BEAUTY BAR: Head to your nearest hair care specialist to have your braids installed. You want to make sure that the person knows what they are doing because otherwise the braids can strain or even pull out your natural hair. Plan at least two hours for your braided style to be completed. Then slip on your favorite blue-toned red lipstick, like Colourpop’s Trust Me or Mac’s Ruby Woo, and you are ready to look effortlessly chic with your new ‘do.
