STYLE GURU STYLE: Denim & Lace

A common saying that can easily be applied to this spring’s trends is, ““What goes around comes around.” Madewell’s spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection put me in vintage heaven. Just about every look had a piece of denim paired masterfully with shades of red and white. Culottes were featured with a boho touch that made them youthful. The Madewell creative director Joyce Lee crafted a collection perfect for adventures in the warm months ahead.

Looking at this collection as a whole, it includes many style steals from the ’70s. Everything was denim, embroidered and flared. As time goes on, fads rise and fall, but the best trends always find a way back years later. Bohemian style is extremely popular for the festival season, and it’s clear this influenced the Madewell spring collection as well. Lee perfectly melted bohemian and ’70s styles together for young adults.

My favorite trends in this collection are the repeated wearing of an off-the-shoulder blouse and denim. Each top has beautiful embroidery with either red or navy threading creating a subtle patriotic look (it is never too early to start thinking about your Fourth of July outfit). They paired these blouses with denim button-down skirts (midi and mini), overalls and cropped jeans.

When planning my own outfit, I knew I could not leave out the denim. I opted to go with a darker wash of high-waisted jeans and cuffed the bottoms to show my chunky sandals. My lace embroidered, off-the-shoulder top was my main focus for this outfit. To keep the focus on my top, I chose to keep it simple and not wear any jewelry.

Get My Look: 1. Off-the-shoulder top. 2. Jeans. 3. Sandals.
