STYLE GURU BIO: Taylor Fleming

Summer is leaving and as fall approaches, a new academic year begins along with a new season of fashion. Fall is one of my favorite seasons to dress for because autumn colors are harmonious with my skin tone and the majority of fall-wear is comfortable. I have found that simplicity is key to the fall wardrobe.

Here I have chosen to start the year off with a black skater-skirt, white graphic T-shirt and a red plaid button-down as my main attire. It’s a simple, classic pairing anyone can mimic and redesign to add their own flair. It’s feminine without being overtly sexualized and familiar but not over-played.

Whether you are new to a college campus or a veteran, it is important to remember to add comfort and sensibility into any outfit, especially when considering the wind capacity of your city. If, for instance, you reside in Chicago, a wide-rimmed sort may not be the way to go. I would suggest replacing the skirt with some black skinny jeans or high-waisted shorts. I also chose some brown pleather booties for shoes to bring my outfit up a scale and for some extra love for my feet as they carry me from class to class, but white sneakers are another option to highlight the white of the T-shirt and add some comfort to your feet.

It’s also important to begin the year by defining who you are, as I have done with my necklace. It may not seem like much, but I have chosen this necklace as my statement piece, my conversation starter. It’s golden, which I have found to harmonize well with almost any outfit. It’s subtle, yet draws the eye of anyone close enough to wonder about the small flowers inside. Best of all, it’s one of a kind. A great outfit can take you far, but your statement piece can take you farther. Gwen Stefani has her signature red-lip, Audrey Hepburn had her classic asymmetrical, short bangs and Alexa Chung is unrecognizable without a white collar. A signature look makes you memorable and in essential for any Fashionista/o.

What is most important about this look is the ability to be altered to your desire. This look is a stepping stone as you explore your tastes in college fashion, but makes sure you look cute while doing so.
