STYLE GURU STYLE: Vintage Edge

I’ve always been one to mix traditionally feminine clothing with edgy pieces and accessories. I was the girl who ditched heels for Converse and combat boots. Looks like some things haven’t changed! But the beautiful thing about fashion today is that the old rules and guidelines are a thing from the past. So, we are all free to mix patterns, textures, colors, and styles as much as our hearts desire, and I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t be happier.

Vintage and retro fashion styles have made huge comebacks for the last couple years, from the ’90s flow that has been trendy this year to the classic ’20s flapper girl style. But The Great Gatsby isn’t the only thing that made our hearts melt over vintage clothing. Many designers such as Saint Laurent, Ronald van der Kemp, and Chanel have incorporated vintage designs into their runway collections. These designs have filtered down into department stores and apparel retailers, where beautiful beaded blouses and dresses, gorgeous velvet clutches, and striped mock neck sweaters can be found hanging in stores.

But for those of us who can’t afford designer couture or ready-to-wear pieces and would prefer to make more eco-friendly fashion choices, shopping at local thrift and consignment stores are the way to go. I found my coat and clutch at consignment stores. Sometimes it’s all about luck when you go to resale stores, but you never know what kind of treasures you might find.

For this outfit, I wanted to mix edgy with classic to create a unique going out look. I started with my beautiful beaded blouse and added my houndstooth print coat to continue the retro theme. My favorite part of this jacket are the oversized sleeves. To add the right kind of edge, I wore my black skinny jeans and beat up black combat boots. I cannot live without these boots, I wear them all the time! They are perfect if you want to add a ’90s rocker vibe to an outfit. I wore a couple more vintage-inspired accessories, like my gorgeous off-white clutch and my long gold earrings. My accessories totally create a perfect combination of vintage and new for this cool look.
