STYLE GURU STYLE: That ’70s Show

Band of Outsiders‘ recent fall 2015 ready-to-wear show featured a number of trends that can be easily translated to your early spring wardrobe. Although designer Scott Sternberg chose not to present his looks in an over the top runway show, he brought a luxurious touch to his collection. He used a combination of many unique trends to create an overall collection that was filled with fresh personality.

Sternberg infused the popular ’70s-inspired trend, relying on abstract, geometric patterns and loose silhouettes. Sternberg also used denim in new and interesting ways. Models outfitted in denim dresses, denim shirts and denim trench coats walked down the Band of Outsiders’ runway. Many of Sternberg’s looks featured workwear trends in a surprisingly feminine way. He paired clunky work-inspired shoes with feminine silhouettes, including airy dresses and pencil skirts.

For my look, I chose to incorporate these three overarching trends from the Band of Outsiders’ show: abstract geometric patterns, denim and work-inspired shoes in order to add an elevated runway twist to a simple spring look. I started with a dress in a geometric pattern, with other geometric elements like a square neckline and asymmetrical hemline. I then added a simple denim jacket, a staple piece for any season. As my dress features neutral colors (white, black and beige), I wanted to add interest with my accessories. Keeping Sternberg’s use of work-inspired shoes in mind, I chose shoes with a chunkier sole in a pale blue to add juxtaposition to the dress’ feminine silhouette. I added a chevron necklace to continue the ’70s-inspired trend.

Get My Look: 1. Dress with an asymmetrical hem. 2. Jean jacket. 3. Shoes with a chunky sole.
