STYLE GURU STYLE: Lavender and Lace

One of my favorite trends of the past few months has been dark, romantic, lingerie-inspired looks. Starting on the S/S 16 runways, designers such as Alexander McQueen and Dior sent out models dressed in dreamy silk and sheer dresses and sexy separates. And all year, Fashionistas have been piling on lace, leather and delicate floral embroidery. So when I saw this black and tan lace slip dress at H&M, I had to have it. And paired with the high-heeled black mules, I had the perfect pieces for a simple, classically beautiful look.

I’m almost always overdressed by the standards of most, but even for me, this dress alone is not a look I would wear very often. As wonderful as this dress is, it’s not exactly an everyday piece. I needed to add something to the look that would take the dress from a night out to an outfit that I would feel comfortable wearing around campus.

The lavender turtleneck layered underneath, also purchased from H&M, is the perfect piece to dress down and warm up the dress for a more casual and cold weather appropriate look. It adds some soft color to the neutral tones of the dress and shoes. And as a basic, modest piece, the turtleneck balances out the lavishness of the dress.

I chose minimal accessories to complete the look, with a pair of vintage silver diamond-shaped earrings, and black knee-high socks, rolled down, under the heels. With the layers of contrasting color and texture in a look like this, statement accessories are not needed. The clothes create a statement on their own.
