STYLE GURU STYLE: Crunches to Cocktails

I think it’s safe to say that every girl is more than okay with the fact that it’s socially acceptable to wear yoga pants around on the daily. Does the term athleisure ring a bell? This trend is every girl’s dream, supporting our independent and busy lifestyles: from running at the gym, to a few hours in the office, to grabbing drinks with a friend. Millenials are crazy about this trend, as it supports our need for a work life balance and health conscious lifestyles. Fitbits are all the rage right now as well, representing the new “must have” accessory.

Athleisure can be presented in varying levels of sportswear to street wear; I was particularly inspired by Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs’s new spin on athleisure through their new sporty contemporary line, Cushnie et Ochs, for “modern women on-the-go.” Cushnie and Ochs were fascinated by the advancement in athletic materials, and wanted to create a line consisting of these materials. Mesh, which is also trending on its own on the runway right now, is one of the materials that interests them. Mesh is an easy and breathable performance fabric that adds a little flare and edge to the outfit. So, it’s perfect to incorporate into this athleisure trend.

My outfit leans towards the more fashion forward, not directly ready for a hard-core workout, side of athleisure similar to Cushnie et Ochs. Since athleisure is such a huge trend now, I have been investing in quality yoga pants from brands like CALIA by Carrie Underwood. Brands like this have more fashion forward and detailed yoga pants to wear out, rather than for hitting the gym (and aren’t see-through when you bend over ladies! We may have finally hit an era where yoga pants and leggings from Forever 21 are no longer acceptable.).

To keep the athletic look, I chose to wear a pair of Nike Air Max Sneakerboots. These sneakers however are not for running or hard-core physical activity, but are considered by Nike as “lifestyle” shoes. This type of sneaker is different from Nike’s more athletic sneakers because of the material detailing, such as suede or leather, and sometimes with unique features like a built in heel. To capture Cushnie and Ochs’s use of athletic material, I chose a black mesh shirt. This shirt also bridges the gap between sportswear and street wear. Finally, to create a feminine and fashion forward athleisure look, I paired my outfit with a faux fur jacket by Kendall + Kylie. This last piece completes the look by signifying that my outfit is athleisure and not just a typical outfit I’d wear to the gym.

Bonus Tip: For a little added flare, pair the outfit with a sporty pair of sunglasses. Also, even though you’re not actually working out in this outfit, who says you can’t count your steps through out the day with a trendy Fitbit?

Get My Look: 1. Quality yoga pants. 2. Lifestyle sneakers. 3. Mesh top. 4. Faux fur jacket.
