Style Advice of the Week

It’s finally winter in both my homes, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and I’m taking advantage of my last few days of rainy nights and chai lattes without a stack of books next to me. With cold weather comes cold weather shopping: thermals, thick socks, boots and most importantly, coats. Finding the perfect winter coat is no easy feat — in fact, it’s my least favorite thing to shop for. It’s so easy to give up and opt for the less-than-flattering black trench coat your mom got you on sale at who knows where. Yet, once you actually do find the perfect one, you remember why you went through all that trouble in the first place: warm, stylish and there for you every cold step of the winter season.

This week’s Fashionista was seen in a red-and-blue patterned maxi, form-fitting black crop-top and amazing beige trench coat with a faux fur collar. The perfect coat should not be too big nor too small: perfect for throwing over a lighter outfit like this one, but thick enough to layer with a sweater or two. I particularly like the faux fur collars seen on a lot of coats this season, it definitely adds edge to a neutral and simple coat. In my opinion, the perfect coat should be a neutral color and have the ability to be worn with anything. Black, beige, even a dark forest green are perfect colors.

For a coat like this Fashionista’s, try this one from ModCloth. Camo-printed parkas have also been popular lately and are great for layering. This one from ASOS is double lined — guaranteed to keep you cozy. Lastly, is the always reliable and always classic North Face coat. For the Fashionistas in snowy and freezing climates, these are made for you. Waterproof and snow-ready, this one boasts a flattering silhouette and cute detachable fur hood. Happy coat shopping!
