STLYE GURU STYLE: Modern Grunge

Growing up in the ’90s, we were the last generation to live the so called “carefree” life. Gushing over Marky Mark in his Calvin Klein’s, screening phone calls and *69 meant no longer calling a crush and hanging up without him ever knowing who it was. We had dial-up internet, which felt like it took an hour just to get into AOL instant messenger. We didn’t have cell phones or Facebook. Every minute of our lives was not documented for the world to see exactly what we had to eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Supermodels and “grunge chic” was all the rage. Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love were like the modern day Bonnie and Clyde. Yes, the ’90s were the best days of our lives.

When I noticed ’90s trends popping back up about a year ago I was, as Cher would say, “like totally buggin’.” I love playing around with styles from different genres, and the ’90s are by far my favorite decade. Perhaps because it takes me back to my youth.  Ripped jeans have been a staple in every girls’ closet for years now. Dress them up with a wicked pair of heels or go grunge by adding some Dr. Marten inspired combat boots. This oversized heather gray dolman tee from JustFab, starts to bring out the ’90s vibe. Tucking in the front and adding a cropped leather jacket keep this look modern and fresh. Layer necklaces and add a watch to take it to the next level. For those super chilly mornings throw on a beanie and, you go girl!

With the cooler weather layering is essential. Take this look to work by switching out the leather jacket for a chic blazer. Add a pop of color with a shoulder bag and chunky heels. Fall is the best time to play around with your wardrobe. Mix it up and try something you never thought would work. You may be surprised with the endless possibilities.
