STYLE GURU STYLE: Transition Wardrobe

Hope you’ve had a great first week back at school, the office or just a great first week of fall (although, it technically isn’t fall yet—but you know what I mean.)  The first week back to school is both tricky and fun, style wise. Chances are you’re going to be busy, and flying from one event to the other. My schedule tends to be hitting the gym in the a.m. (when I have the strength to leave my bed before I absolutely have to,) to going to class, maybe meeting for lunch and going to work or some event/meeting afterwards.  That’s…a lot!  And for me, carrying around an extra bag with a change of clothes just isn’t functional.

So, I need to build outfits that with a change of  an accessory and adding lipstick, can be transformed from a cute school outfit, to an outfit-outfit for the evenings.  For makeup, I prefer a dark mauvey matte pink with a gentle browned smokey eye. I want to look awake and fresh, but with a hint of smokiness. Try pairing loose, flowy shorts with a fun print and a bodysuit (remember I love these?)  Adding a bomber jacket instantly makes this outfit very chill and unique in a slightly more dressed up way. This jacket actually used to be a staple in my mom’s closet from the ’80s, shoulder pads and everything, that she gifted down to me. I love how it adds a very structured shape while still being loose and a bit grungy.

Dark green bomber jackets have come into trend lately, and I’ve been seeing them all over Instagram.  Browsing through your local thrift shop will probably bring you face to face to a similar feeling jacket.  Remember, bomber jackets are usually the attention getter of the outfit. Don’t be afraid to go a little crazy with it—it doesn’t have to be dark green, and it doesn’t have to look exactly like the one you see on a model. These are statement pieces—the more authentic and the more history it has to it, the better!

To my classes, I wore the bodysuit and shorts with a pair of flip flops, and then threw on the jacket and a pair of brown Victorian-esque heels to go to my nightly meetings with all my organizations. The nice thing about a pair of heels like this (approx. 3 inches) is they’re enough height to give your outfit a makeover, but not high enough that they’re difficult to walk in. Any outfit can be made into a good transition outfit as long as the base, which is your shorts/skirt, top or dress, are all comfy. Dressing it up with a fun pair of shoes or sometimes even one statement piece, like a bomber jacket, can carry your outfit throughout everything in your crazy day. Good luck to a great semester, and see you soon!
