STYLE GURU STYLE: The Real MVP

The Super Bowl is the annual championship game of the National Football League, or as most of us know it, the NFL. This year, the New England Patriots defeated the Seattle Seahawks in the last few seconds of the game. However, I can’t help but think, if faced against Tommy Hilfiger’s team of models, I don’t think the Patriots would have stood a chance. In honor of his 30th anniversary, Hilfiger’s pre-fall 2015 collection was inspired by an American football love story. The models walked down a football field with each fashion play captured on the Jumbotron; their uniforms consisted of preparatory silhouettes, faux fur jackets, pleated skirts and, of course, the varsity tops sporting the number “30.”

When acquiring inspiration from this line, I took a more casual, everyday approach. An essential piece when creating this look is a jersey-looking top or dress. I live in my varsity T-shirt because not only is it super comfortable, but also versatile. I paired my top with a leather mini skirt with silver zipper detail to create an edgier look than what was portrayed on the field. As we saw in Hilfiger’s collection, he used a 70s-inspired preparatory look to construct each one of his masterpieces. In doing this he incorporated many wool ponchos and double-breasted coats. I went with the double-breasted coat to create the perfect balance between trendy (varsity top and leather mini) and timeless. To me, the “it” factor in his collection were the football-lace booties. They are most definitely going to be a necessity in your closet come fall. Nonetheless, I have yet to acquire a pair of those bad boys, so I stuck with my classic Converse to keep it sporty-chic.

Even though this collection is for fall, there is no reason you can’t incorporate it into your daily look this spring and summer. When taking a look from one season to another, some primary things to focus on are colors, fabrics and accessories. There’s no need for a wool cashmere scarf in spring in Florida and bare legs are a must, so ex-nay the tights. Ready, set, hike!

Get My Look: 1. A varsity T-shirt. 2. A double-breasted coat. 3. A leather mini skirt.
