STYLE GURU STYLE: Pattern-Blocking

May 7th, 2015 at 2:00am

When I think of Tom Ford, I immediately think “chic,” and that is exactly what came to mind the second I saw his fall 2015 ready-to-wear collection. But here’s the thing: when would us college kids ever want to wear, or even get the chance to wear, something so fancy? Well, do you ever feel like you want to dress nice but not like you’re totally overdoing it? Instead, you just want to look more presentable than usual? Sometimes I find that adding the extra collared shirt or the shoes you only wear for special occasions complete the job perfectly. However, the Tom Ford collection showed me a different way to accomplish that task. It shows a lot of layers and pattern-blocking. Everything is so cool and different yet still so chic! Tom Ford knew exactly what he was doing when he was creating this line. The originality of every item left me questioning how someone could stitch together so many different fabrics. It still leaves me in awe.

My favorite thing from this collection was the pattern-blocking. (Lately, the trends have been color-blocking, but leave it to Tom Ford to start a new trend!) In order to find something that I felt was even close in comparison to anything from the line, I had to dig deep down into my closet. I found this collared black shirt that “pattern-blocked” with plaid. While keeping the outfit a little more fancy than usual, I wore leather jeans but cuffed them to add a little edge. Lastly, I threw on my Jeffrey Campbell booties, which are perfect for a more dressed up outfit.

Get My Look: 1. Pattern-blocking shirt. 2. Leather jeans. 3. Jeffrey Campbell booties. 4. Rebecca Minkoff cross-body bag.
