STYLE GURU STYLE: Lay It On Me

One may think that the only element to Fashion Week is the runway shows, but a true fashion avid would know that street style is one of the major highlights as well. With as much emphasis paid on the runway shows, the trends that you need to know do include fashion industry veterans who attend fashion week. One of my favorite trends this time around is layering crop tops for winter. Who said crop tops are limited to summer? With layering in mind, I looked towards Maison Margiela for inspiration. Hunchbacked models aside, a common key item on the runway was the dramatic floor-sweeping coat.

I firmly believe that an ankle-grazing coat is a winter staple because not only is it extremely practical in terms of keeping you warm and cozy, but it is also adds a certain allure to every look you have in mind. If you have one buried deep within the depths of your closet, try experimenting with high-waisted trousers, midi dresses and preppy skirts, all of which are my favorite looks when it comes to floor-sweeping coats. As the weather is transitioning towards spring, I decided to combine the crop top street style trend along with a floor-sweeping coat.

On a long day filled with back-to-back midterms, I chose a dusty pink crop top to go with my white printed high-waist skirt. To keep myself mildly warm in class, I opted for a sheer cover-up. The last touch was of course my ankle-grazing coat. Playing around with texture is important when it comes to layering to kick a look up a notch. That is exactly what I did. Every piece is of a different texture that blended well together. To further replicate the street style trend, roll up your crop top to bare a bit of your midriff à la Aaliyah circa the ’90s.

Get My Look: 1. An ankle-grazing coat. 2. A tiered crop top. 3. An A-line mini skirt.
