STYLE GURU STYLE: Floral Frenzy

As we enter the month of May, college kids often experience a bittersweet feeling. After all, school is coming to a close and we can almost taste the freedom of summer. However, May also is a time during which a million of assignments are due and finals occur. For seniors (like myself), there is the added potential stress of graduation and “the future.” During times like these, it’s important to take a moment to appreciate the little things.

Some of my favorite things about this time of year are the blooming flowers that start to become ubiquitous this point in the season. My ideal day would include spending most, if not all, of it in a flower field under the sun. I love the way floral has been incorporated into much of fashion today; it is hard to feel melancholy when wearing something that evokes such joy and happiness.

When I saw Giambattista Valli’s spring 2016 couture collection, full of floral appliqués and designs, I knew I had to emulate it. It is an uplifting response to the November attacks in Paris, as Valli drew inspiration from its many magnificence gardens. I decided to use this collection as my foundation, with its colorful looks, short lengths and floral prints, and put my own spin on it.

For my look, I went for a two-piece floral print crop set, with an A-line silhouette similar to those featured in Valli’s collection. A two-piece is a great investment; you can either wear each component together for a bolder statement, or as separates. This one can also be dressed up or down and easily transition from day to night.

Since the set was so colorful and the focus of my look, I decided to have most of the other components of my outfit be neutral. Gray booties are a great alternative to the black combat boot, a staple, and match with virtually everything. I added silver jewelry, with a pop of turquoise, to accent but not distract from the outfit. To finish it off, I could not forget my favorite choker and bold cat eye sunglasses. This added some edge to an overall feminine look.

Get My Look: 1. Floral crop top. 2. Floral skirt. 3. Gray booties.
